Daniele Conterno Barolo
Daniele Conterno Barolo
Grapes — 100% Nebbiolo (Michet and Lampia)
Region — Monforte d'Alba, Barolo DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
Tasting Notes — Vibrant garnet with the early blush of orange at the rim that Nebbiolo announces itself with. Dried rose petals, red cherry, wild raspberry, and earthy tobacco on the nose, with a mineral undercurrent and a whisper of tar and licorice. The palate is structured and serious — firm, grippy tannins and bright acidity giving way to layers of red fruit and spice on a long, complex finish. Classic Barolo built for the cellar, but impossible to resist now.
The Wine — Nebbiolo from the family's prized crus in Monforte d'Alba — including holdings in Bussia, Pugnane, and Panerole — three of the most celebrated sites in all of Barolo. Each cru brings its own character: Bussia the structure and power, Pugnane the finesse, Panerole the aromatic complexity from its southern exposure and chalk-veined soils. Aged in traditional large oak casks for a minimum of 24 months before further rest in bottle.
Farming — Organically farmed. The estate's mature vines are tended entirely without synthetic inputs, with a deep commitment to the health of the soil and the integrity of the fruit that has been cultivated on this land for four generations.
Winemaking — Traditional in every sense. Aged exclusively in large oak casks (botti) in the classic Barolo style — no new oak, no shortcuts. Barolo at the Franco Conterno estate is primarily finished with extended bottle aging rather than relying on barrel time alone, a patient approach that allows the wine to develop complexity and find its equilibrium naturally.
The Producer — The Franco Conterno estate — known locally as Cascina Sciulun — is rooted in the hamlet of Bussia in the heart of Monforte d'Alba, one of the most powerful communes in the Barolo appellation. The family's vines were first planted by great-grandfather Pietro Conterno, passed to Giacomo, then to Franco, who took the helm in 1995. Today, Daniele and his brother Andrea represent the fourth generation — Andrea dedicated to the quiet work of vineyard and cellar, Daniele as the estate's voice and storyteller, carrying their grandfather's vision forward with fresh energy and a fierce commitment to tradition. The wines are classic, structured, and honest: brick-hued Barolo that earns its reputation through patience rather than polish.
Drink It With — Brasato al Barolo, wild boar stew, truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, or anything that deserves one of Italy's greatest wines.
