Florian André 'QABS' Côtes du Rhône
Florian André 'QABS' Côtes du Rhône
Grapes — Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault
Region — Tavel, Southern Rhône, France
Tasting Notes — Deep garnet with a generous, sun-warmed character. Ripe blackberry, red plum, and wild herbs on the nose, with a mineral undercurrent and a touch of garrigue — that distinctly Provençal whisper of scrubland, lavender, and dry stone. The palate is full and round, with silky tannins, good structure, and a long, balanced finish. Southern Rhône sunshine in a bottle, made with discipline and intention.
The Wine — A Côtes du Rhône from the biodynamically farmed vineyards of Château de Manissy on the right bank of the Rhône, just south of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grown on sandy clay soils topped with galets roulés — the iconic rounded river stones of the southern Rhône that absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, building ripeness and complexity in the fruit. This cuvée was made exclusively for Queen Anne Bottle Shop.
Farming — Certified organic since 2009, farmed biodynamically throughout. No chemical fertilizers, no pesticides, no herbicides — all vineyard work planned in accordance with lunar cycles and biodynamic preparations. The 60-hectare estate has been farmed sustainably since the early 20th century, when the Missionary Fathers of the Holy Family first planted vines here and tended them with deep care for the land.
Winemaking — No chemical inputs in the cellar. Florian avoids manipulation at every stage, letting the fruit and site drive the wine from vine to bottle. The result is a Côtes du Rhône with more precision, freshness, and finesse than the appellation typically promises.
The Producer — Château de Manissy is a 17th-century estate on the right bank of the Rhône whose vineyards were planted and tended for nearly a century by a congregation of Catholic missionary monks. In 2003, the Brothers — growing older and needing a successor — entrusted the estate to Florian André, a seventh-generation Tavel winegrower who had apprenticed under one of the region's most respected winemakers. Florian has honored their legacy while pushing the estate further: converting to organic certification in 2009 and biodynamics shortly after, driven in part by the birth of his son and a conviction that healthy land makes honest wine. The QABS cuvée is a private label made by Florian specifically for Queen Anne Bottle Shop — a direct expression of that relationship and a wine you won't find anywhere else.
Drink It With — Lamb chops with herbs de Provence, beef daube, roasted eggplant, hard sheep's milk cheese, or a long Sunday dinner that has nowhere to be.
