Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain Red Blend
Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain Red Blend
Grapes — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Syrah
Region — Red Mountain AVA, Washington State
Tasting Notes — Deep ruby with a brooding, complex nose — cassis, dark cherry, fresh rosemary, cinnamon bark, and a whisper of cocoa and holiday spice. The palate is structured and layered, with dark bramble fruit, vanilla, tamarind, and a long, textured finish underpinned by the firm, mineral tannins that Red Mountain is known for. Powerful and elegant at once. Built to age but impossible to resist now.
The Wine — A field blend from all five of Hedges' Demeter-certified biodynamic estate vineyards on Red Mountain — Bel Villa, Hedges, Jolet, Les Gosses, and one additional parcel — bringing together the best of each site into one wine that speaks to the mountain as a whole. The inclusion of small amounts of Portuguese varieties like Souzao, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Cão adds a distinctive aromatic complexity and depth that sets this blend apart from conventional Washington Bordeaux-style reds.
Farming — Demeter certified biodynamic across all five estate vineyards, with CCOF organic certification as well. The biodynamic transition began in 2008, driven by second-generation siblings Sarah Hedges Goedhart and Christophe Hedges, with full Demeter certification achieved across all vineyards by 2021. No synthetic inputs of any kind. All vineyard work is guided by the biodynamic calendar and a commitment to treating the farm as a self-sustaining ecosystem. Salmon Safe certified. Ten percent of net profits donated to charitable causes annually.
Winemaking — Native yeast fermentation throughout. Aged in a combination of American and French oak, with a portion of new oak — worth knowing if you prefer minimal wood influence, though the wine carries it with elegance. Certified vegan. Minimal sulfur additions only. The goal, in Sarah's words, is wines that reflect sense of place and are built for the table rather than the trophy shelf.
The Producer — Hedges Family Estate is one of Washington's great pioneering estates — founded by Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges in 1987, when Red Mountain was little more than a dusty, obscure hillside in the Yakima Valley with enormous untapped potential. Anne-Marie, who grew up in Champagne, brought an Old World sensibility to the project; Tom brought the entrepreneurial drive to build it from the ground up. They were among the first to plant on Red Mountain and instrumental in establishing it as a recognized AVA. Today the estate is led by their daughter Sarah Hedges Goedhart, the head winemaker, whose passion for biodynamic farming and minimal-intervention winemaking has taken the estate to a new level of quality and integrity. If you've already tried the Domaine Magdalena Cabernet on our shelves, you've already met this family — Maggie Hedges is Christophe's wife, and the two estates share both land and lineage on one of Washington's most extraordinary hillsides.
Drink It With — Braised lamb shanks, a proper ribeye, mushroom-stuffed beef tenderloin, aged sharp cheddar, or a long winter dinner that deserves something serious in the glass.
