Domaine Arnaud Lambert 'Les Parcelles' Saumur Blanc
Domaine Arnaud Lambert 'Les Parcelles' Saumur Blanc
Grapes — 100% Chenin Blanc
Region — Saumur, Loire Valley, France
Tasting Notes — Pale gold with a crystalline clarity. Stone fruit and citrus on the nose, with white flowers, green apple, and a distinct chalk-and-wet-stone lift from the limestone underneath. The palate is dry, taut, and finely drawn, with vibrant acidity and remarkable finesse for a wine at this level. The finish is long, saline, and refreshing. Chenin that is genuinely delicious young, which is rarer than it should be.
The Wine — A blend of small parcels of Chenin Blanc across the villages of Brézé, Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, and in some years Montsoreau, on sandy clay and various topsoils sitting over chalky tuffeau limestone bedrock. The blend runs somewhere between three and five hectares depending on the vintage, with vine ages varying by site from older plantings dating to the late 1980s through to more recent additions.
Whole-bunch pressed, with only the free-run juice used. Fermented with ambient yeasts in stainless steel and concrete, with no oak at any stage. Arnaud's philosophy across his range is deliberate: the entry wines stay in tank to preserve fruit and freshness, and only as you move up into the single Clos bottlings does oak enter the picture. This is Saumur Chenin with nothing between you and the limestone.
Farming — Certified organic across roughly 40 hectares, with the estate in conversion to biodynamics. This matters more here than it might elsewhere: around 70% of the vineyard surface in Brézé and Saint-Cyr belongs to cooperatives, where blending and mass production are the norm, so Arnaud's insistence on organic farming and parcel-by-parcel expression is genuinely against the grain of his own appellation.
Winemaking — Direct whole-bunch pressing, free-run juice only. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no added SO2 during fermentation. Vinified and aged exclusively in stainless steel and concrete. Fining, filtration, and any bottling sulfur are unconfirmed; worth asking your rep.
The Producer — Domaine Arnaud Lambert as a label only dates to 2017, but the story behind it is longer. Arnaud's father Yves founded Domaine de Saint-Just in Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg in 1996, while Arnaud was still finishing his viticulture and oenology degree. Father and son began working together in 2005, and in 2009 they took over management of the vineyards of Château de Brézé under a twenty-five year contract. In 2017 Arnaud united everything under his own name.
Brézé is a small hamlet a few miles south of Saumur with an outsized history. The château is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and five hundred years ago the rich, textured Chenins grown on this limestone hill were considered the equal of Château d'Yquem, with royals exchanging bottles of one for the other annually. In modern times the hill became famous through Clos Rougeard, now among the most expensive wines in France, with Guiberteau and Collier following it into cult status. All of those estates hold a parcel or two on Brézé. Arnaud has eight vineyards there alone, plus his holdings in Saint-Cyr.
That embarrassment of riches may be exactly why he has never reached cult status himself: there is no single trophy bottle to fixate on, just a long list of excellent ones. The happy consequence for the rest of us is that his prices sit several notches below his famous neighbors, and 'Les Parcelles' is the most affordable way into one of the great limestone terroirs of France.
Drink It With — Oysters, grilled white fish, roast chicken, fresh goat cheese, falafel and tahini, spring vegetables, or an aperitif that runs longer than intended.
