Folk Machine Rosé of Gamay

Grapes — 100% Gamay Noir

Region — Arroyo Seco AVA, Monterey County, California

Tasting Notes — Pale salmon with a luminous clarity. Fresh strawberry, watermelon, and dried herbs on the nose, with a subtle savory edge that sets it apart from conventional rosé. The palate is light, crisp, and refreshing — bright acidity, minimal tannin, and a clean, mouthwatering finish with a semi-savory quality that makes it genuinely versatile at the table. Serve slightly chilled and don't overthink it.

The Wine — 100% Gamay Noir from a block grafted and planted by the Hobo Wine team in 2013 in the Arroyo Seco AVA — a very sandy, rocky site covered in what locals call "Greenfield Potatoes" (large rounded rocks) that is cool, windy, and often compared to Carneros in its growing conditions. The block was originally planted to make red wine but turned out to be so well-suited to rosé that the team mostly keeps it that way. Grapes are taken directly to press with just a minimal amount of passive skin contact during transportation from Greenfield to Santa Rosa. Only 463 cases produced.

Farming — Certified Sustainable Winegrower (CSWA). The Arroyo Seco site benefits from cool Pacific air funneling through a mountain gorge into the Salinas Valley — a natural temperature regulator that slows ripening and preserves the natural acidity and delicacy of the fruit. Hobo Wine Company is a CCOF certified organic winery and a proud member of 1% for the Planet, contributing annually to The Climate Center, School Garden Network, and Homeless Garden Project.

Winemaking — Uninoculated, native yeast fermentation in stainless steel with temperature control to slow fermentation and preserve aromatics. No skin maceration beyond the natural contact during transport. Light, minimal intervention from start to finish. Even the bottle is a statement — bottled in antique green lightweight glass, which carries a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional flint bottles.

The Producer — Folk Machine is one of several labels under Hobo Wine Company, founded in 2002 in Santa Rosa by Kenny Likitprakong — a Thai-American winemaker whose low-intervention, terroir-driven philosophy has quietly made Hobo one of the most principled small wineries in California. Folk Machine is the home for esoteric, smaller-production wines: each one a direct expression of a specific place, variety, and vintage, made with as little interference as possible. Kenny's approach is consistent across every label: wines of integrity and charm that respect their role at the table — moderate in alcohol, noticeable in acidity, and honest about where they come from.

Drink It With — Grilled salmon, herb-roasted chicken, a charcuterie spread, a summer picnic, or any afternoon that deserves something refreshing, thoughtful, and completely unpretentious.
