Klaus Lentsch Kerner

Grapes — 100% Kerner

Region — Burggrafenamt, Alto Adige / Südtirol DOC, Italy

Tasting Notes — Pale gold with a brilliant clarity. Intensely aromatic and unmistakably alpine — muscat grape, quince, honeysuckle, and a whisper of citrus blossom on the nose, with subtle dried herbs underneath. The palate is textured and lively, with good acidity and a clean mineral finish that cuts through the fruit and lingers long. Finely aromatic, lively, crisp — exactly as described by the producer, and impossible to argue with.

The Wine — 100% Kerner from selected vineyards in the Burggrafenamt, a sun-drenched region of vineyards and orchards in the heart of Alto Adige, tucked between the Dolomites and the Adige River. Kerner is a crossing of Trollinger and Riesling — developed in Germany in the mid-20th century but thoroughly at home in the high-altitude, cool-climate vineyards of South Tyrol, where its natural acidity and aromatic complexity come into their fullest expression. Low yields, precise ripening, and gentle winemaking in stainless steel preserve every nuance the grape and site have to offer.

Farming — Sustainably farmed with a commitment to quality at every link of the chain — from vine to winery to glass. Klaus Lentsch farms across three distinct vineyard areas in Alto Adige, each at elevations between 300 and 600 meters, on soils ranging from quartz porphyry and moraine deposits to glacial gravel and Adige river stones.

Winemaking — Gentle pressing of hand-selected, perfectly ripened grapes followed by careful fermentation using modern cellar technology to handle the wine as softly as possible. Each wine matures in its ideal vessel — for the Kerner, stainless steel to preserve the grape's signature freshness and aromatic precision. Klaus Lentsch's philosophy is patience: wine is given all the time it needs to develop its full potential before release.

The Producer — Klaus Lentsch comes from a long-established South Tyrolean winegrowing family whose roots in the region stretch back to the 19th century, but in 2008 he struck out on his own — purchasing the Hemberg farm at Campodazzo and founding his own estate at a time when small, independent producers were rare in a region dominated by large cooperatives. Starting with just three wines, he has grown the estate to 12.5 hectares across three distinct vineyard areas — each with its own character, each farmed with the same meticulous attention to quality. His flagship wines are Pinot Noir, but his aromatic whites are the ones that surprise people. Kerner is the perfect introduction: a wine that captures everything that makes Alto Adige one of the most singular white wine regions in Europe — mountain freshness, alpine precision, and a distinctiveness that no other region on earth can reproduce.

Drink It With — Fresh trout, asparagus with hollandaise, speck and aged mountain cheese, lightly spiced Asian dishes, or a long hike with a very good packed lunch.
